The balance of economic data surprises is positive for the first time since October.

While stock-market bulls took back control in early 2019 on expectations fears of an imminent economic slowdown were off the mark, data from developed market countries is starting to offer some tentative signs of vindication.

Global equity markets ended 2018 on a sour note, with the S&P 500 SPX, +0.50% dropping more than 9% in December to end the year down more than 6%, its worst annual performance since 2008. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.54% fell 5.6% in 2018. At the same time, worries over the outlook for global growth have at times shadowed markets. Those concerns were in the spotlight last week as the European Central Bank renewed stimulus efforts and warned that external uncertainties left risks for the eurozone skewed to the downside.
