Zhang Lan's and Wang Xiaofei's Douyin accounts have been permanently banned following allegations of spreading misinformation and disrespecting the deceased. The ban coincides with the seventh day of Barbie Hsu's passing and her third-year wedding anniversary, raising questions about whether her 'final wish' has been fulfilled.
Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, has taken drastic action against the accounts of Zhang Lan , the former mother-in-law of the late Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, and her son, Wang Xiaofei. The announcement came on Saturday, February 8th, stating that both accounts were permanently banned for violating several guidelines, including 'violating public order and morality', 'disrespecting the deceased and their family', and 'hurting public sentiment'.
\Douyin's Security Centre alleged that Zhang Lan's account had promoted false content for commercial gain and to create hype, despite previous punishments. Another account using Zhang Lan's name and Xiaofei's account were also banned indefinitely. The statement highlighted an account named 'I am Xia Xiao Jian', which had disseminated false information, claiming that Xiaofei had paid for the chartered flight transporting Barbie's ashes from Japan. This claim, which was liked by Zhang Lan, sparked controversy and prompted Barbie's sister, Dee Hsu, to issue a statement refuting it. Netizens later alleged that Xiao Jian is Zhang Lan's godson, a claim Zhang Lan has denied. The final trigger for the ban reportedly came when Jetbay, the flight charter company, publicly dismissed the rumors, stating that the cost of the chartered flight was indeed approved by Dee Hsu's company.\The timing of the ban, coinciding with the seventh day of Barbie's passing and her third-year wedding anniversary with DJ Koo, is particularly poignant. The seventh day of mourning is considered a significant day in Chinese tradition, when the spirit of the deceased is believed to return home. Some media reports speculated that Barbie's 'final wish' expressed in her last Weibo post, calling for action against Zhang Lan's alleged spread of misinformation, had been fulfilled, although tragically, she did not live to see it. On the same day, DJ Koo posted a heartfelt tribute to Barbie on Instagram, expressing his eternal love for her. Netizens expressed their support and condolences, many also celebrating the ban on Zhang Lan and Xiaofei's accounts.
