Doyel: Pacers provide beautiful evening to Indianapolis homeless.
INDIANAPOLIS – Two moments stand out. Well, no. That’s ridiculous. A lot more than two moments stand out from the most beautiful evening of a beautiful week here in Indianapolis, the Indiana Pacers’ 25th annual “Come to Our House” Season of Giving dinner at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where the franchise opens its doors to 600 of our most vulnerable neighbors, people experiencing homelessness, to serve them a warm Thanksgiving meal.
A few more words from Haliburton, a Q-and-A session, really, with Denari. Just to give the people a look at something they don’t see every day: An actual NBA star, larger than life. The man’s coat is stained and fraying. He is smiling. First is the salad station, and 6-6 Pacers guard Chris Duarte scoops lettuce and tomatoes onto the man’s plate. The man starts to slide down the row, but Duarte stops him to add carrots. Next is the salad dressing station, where Melissa Pierce has the ladle. Her husband, Pacers assistant Lloyd Pierce, is down the way with the stuffing.“Can’t complain,” he says.
“Don’t be mad at me,” this guy’s telling Buddy, “but Kobe’s my favorite player. Hey, you can play too!” Morris is serving cranberry sauce. Wearing a silly chef’s hat. As happy as I’ve ever seen him, and this is a man who knows Popes and Presidents. But he’s best with cranberry sauce.The best thing about Chris Duarte? He has no idea how special he is. Seriously, he’s greeting every person like they’re the special one here.
