“He was a compassionate physician, always attuned to the needs of his patients beyond their physical ailments,” said Dr. Helen Te, who oversees the U. of C.’s adult liver transplant program.

Baker, 82, died March 1, according to the University of Chicago. He was a longtime Hyde Park resident.

While at the U. of C., Baker helped establish the Midwest’s first liver transplant program, which grew to become one of the largest liver transplant programs in the world. The program also performed the first living donor transplantation in the U.S. in 1989, Te said. Baker also is credited with strides in the study of acute alcoholic hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver caused by heavy drinking that is a forerunner of cirrhosis.

“Dr. Baker was a brilliant physician, Southern gentleman, transplant innovator and thoughtful scholar,” said professor of medicine David Rubin, who oversees gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at University of Chicago Medicine.
