A driver who police say was speeding, missed a turn, went airborne after hitting a curb and then landed on another person, is facing criminal charges.

WEST VALLEY CITY — A driver who allegedly admitted to drinking a few beers before driving 100 mph, crashing and landing on top of another person, is facing criminal charges.

Gaibriel Sebastian Yates, 30, of Taylorsville, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with negligently operating a vehicle resulting in serious injury, a third-degree felony; and making an improper left turn, an infraction. On Aug. 7, a man was standing with a group outside an apartment complex near 4000 S. Redwood Road when "they heard a vehicle's tires screeching " as it approached, according to charging documents.

The driver, Yates, was attempting to turn into the complex "but missed the turn, jumped the curb and hit the ledge that everyone was hanging out at. The car went airborne and landed on ," the charges state.When police spoke to Yates, he "admitted to speeding at 100 mph, drinking a few beers earlier in the day and smoking marijuana. Yates showed signs of impairment during the field-sobriety test," the charges state.
