We are living in a scary and uncertain moment. Yet America has overcome calamities, both natural and human-made, before. To help put it all in perspective, Ken Burns spoke with Forbes about how America has responded to past crises
There are many instances in our past where disease has run through places—Native American villages, frontier settlements, things like that. We’ve suffered outbreaks of smallpox, diphtheria and other pestilences where if you got sick, there was little chance at survival. But this situation is entirely unique. In the Second World War, which required the same kind of national mobilization, the fight wasn’t happening here. Today the war is happening here, and the enemy is a tiny virus.
