An LAUSD student is suing district on a free speech platform, claiming they restricted her criticism of dairy industry.
A Los Angeles high school student is suing the school district and the U.S. Department of Agriculture for allegedly violating her First Amendment right to share information at school about alternatives to cow’s milk and health concerns about dairy consumption, according to court papers obtained on Friday, May 12.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Unified School District said the district does not comment on pending legal matters, adding that healthy alternatives are provided based on student needs. In the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that the school district unconstitutionally discriminated on the basis of viewpoint by prohibiting Williamson from distributing information highlighting dairy’s negative impacts, while school sanctioned dairy promotions — such as “Got Milk?” ads in the morning announcements — are ubiquitous at school.
