Emma Strom entered the eating disorders program in 2020, soon after her 16th birthday, after losing 30 pounds in three months. Her struggles with eating began two years earlier, while in middle school, but were more exposed while isolating at home with her family at the start of the pandemic.Strom said she spent a month in the hospital and has since gained control over her eating disorder.
While a precise cause is not known, eating disorders may be related to other issues, including anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, low self-esteem and stress, the hospital said. “Eating disorders don’t have a size. Eating disorders aren’t just starving yourself and purging. NJ Advance Media was given a tour of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital eating disorders unit by Schade-Button and Ghinassi. The dining area is key to treatment because the idea is to have patients eating together, rather than alone, which Ghinassi described an an example of “participant modeling.”
