A video clip capturing Minister Edwin Tong during a walkabout in Marine Parade has been edited and shared online, leading to accusations of negative portrayal. Minister Tong and the volunteer featured in the clip have clarified the context of the video, stating that it was taken out of context and intended to mislead.
A video clip taken during Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong 's walkabout at Marine Terrace on Saturday (March 22) has caused controversy after being shared online. Minister Tong, who is also an MP for Marine Parade GRC, was engaging with residents at a coffee shop in Marine Terrace as part of his visit to the new Marine Parade -Braddell Heights GRC.
A Facebook user named Kent Lau posted an edited video of Tong's interactions wherein he appears to be speaking enthusiastically to a group of elderly men. One man appears to raise his hand and point his middle finger, as highlighted in the slowed-down video. The video then cuts to a volunteer, Delane Lim, speaking to Minister Tong, where Lim can be seen pointing at the camera with a serious expression. Minister Tong clarified on Sunday that the video was taken out of context and intended to portray him negatively for political reasons. He stated that Lau, the original poster, had himself acknowledged the misrepresentation. Lau wrote, 'It may have looked like a finger gesture you're familiar with, but it was NOT. The mood at that uncle-and-It's disappointing that some people have taken my video out of context and twisted the truth.' Delane Lim, the volunteer who appears in the video, also posted on Facebook to explain the situation. Lim, who has been working with Minister Tong for several months, described the minister as a dedicated and attentive public servant. He stated that he was simply informing Minister Tong about an unreached table during the walkabout, adding that he admitted to having a serious face which may have come across as more intense than intended. Lim emphasized that Minister Tong prioritizes engaging with all residents, regardless of their demeanor. He recalled an incident where the minister was advised against engaging with a seemingly unfriendly group, but he insisted on connecting with them and addressing their concerns
