The 400-page report follows, and affirms, a 2019 investigation into SBC by the Houston...

An outside report has confirmed longstanding abuse in Southern Baptist Convention churches and ways forward to prevent abuse and validate survivors.Acknowledgment and validation can’t erase decades of trauma or heal the deepest of wounds. But for survivors of sexual abuse whose accusations were ignored, dismissed and used to hurt them more, acknowledgment and validation mark the beginning of holding their predators accountable for their sins.

Not only did the SBC’s executive committee dismiss and intimidate the accusers, but it covered up crimes, enabled predators to have opportunities to continue their abuse in different locales and blocked reforms to address the abuse. The report also found that despite resisting suggestions to compile a database of predatory pastors and ministers, church leaders had have a private list of more than 700 offenders, 75 of whom had worked in Texas. It corroborates the allegations of victims, who have said for decades that church leaders ignored their claims, refusing to investigate. Church leaders shamed, even demonized, many of these victims.

That they’ve not been angered by the presence of sexual predators on ministerial staffs and have done more to protect these offenders than their victims speaks to an immoral misplaced set of priorities, which betrays the tenets of their purported faith.
