Some might think it strange to reenact such a difficult journey in the days leading up to...

it seems we need that self-reflection more urgently than ever.

All then burst into triumphant singing that any Hispanic kid who has stood outside shivering in the peregrino group will remember as signaling the truly exciting part – the food and warmth that follows. That is, tamales and hot chocolate. Or pozole accompanied by hot fruit punch, sometimes “con piquete,” with a shot of rum or brandy. Ideally, the piquete comes after the piñata.

Out of these domineering origins, however, we’re left with a celebration of compassion and community. For many, born in the U.S. to immigrant parents, the MECA celebration was their first ever posada. For others, this was a nostalgic reminder of the posadas they celebrated as kids back home in Mexico, Guatemala or Honduras.

In the early '70s, when the posada in Old Sixth Ward was still hosted by the nearby St. Joseph Catholic Church, each stop in the procession was explicitly dedicated to a different migrant group, along with the traditional nine values offered up in prayer. The first? Hospitality, dedicated to “all of our brothers and sisters who come from Mexico and seek shelter in this country.” The second, happiness, dedicated to the people of Haiti fleeing economic and political repression.
