With Carolyn Bryant Donham dead, the Till family has lost any chance of holding someone accountable for his killing.

The haunting past came rushing back on Tuesday night, when Carolyn Bryant DonhamDonham was the white woman who in August of 1955 accused a Black teenager, Emmett Till, of making “improper advances” toward her in the small grocery store in Money, Miss., where she was working. It was an accusation that would prove to be a death sentence for the 14-year-old boy.

What makes this tragedy even sadder is that the two white men acquitted of the murder by an all-white jury — Donham’s husband Roy Bryant and brother-in-law J.W. Milam — later confessed in an interview with Look Magazine. Donham later denied recanting her earlier testimony, and federal investigators, unable to determine the truth, closed the case they had reopened because of the book.

Gordon may be responding with the wisdom that comes from a lifetime of sorrow and regret, and he should be commended for that. But an “unhappy life” is an inadequate sentence for the taking of another life. Neither Till’s family nor the country received justice.
