Nigerian-born founder 'Yemisi Awosan is bringing the tastes of her childhood to grocery stores in the U.S.

Awosan’s recipes showcase West Africa’s diverse cultures through other ingredients too, like groundnuts and brown-eyed peas. These ingredients provide depth, layering spices and textures to create soups with serious bite, like the namesake Egunsi soup which is studded with chewy melon seeds. Each sip brings a new taste, as creamy braised collard greens fade into the quiet heat of a habanero. The Groundnut soup is rich and packed with peanut butter flavor, but cut with just enough zingy ginger.
“That was the way I was able to tell the story of my culture to my friends,” she says. “I realized I love the idea of how food brings people together.” After college, she moved to New York for a career as a buyer in the retail industry. Alone in a new city, she was reminded of college, and the friendships she made over food. She began striking up friendships over Saturday night dinners and, as interest in her food grew, began working on the side as a personal chef for corporate business offices and supper clubs.
“I realized I was spending my whole weekend cooking for people, and I loved the idea of gathering the people together,” she says. “I loved that I was able to tell the story of my Africa, and it got me thinking that I wanted to do this as a business. I knew I wanted to create my own brand.”, a nonprofit bakery and food enterprise incubator created byThe program provided her with business support and the shared commercial kitchen space Awosan rents to make her soups today.
