Elderly Chinatown Resident Endured Over a Decade Without Utilities in Cluttered Flat
PovertyElderlyChinatown

An elderly Chinatown resident lived for over 10 years without electricity, water, and gas in a cluttered, one-room flat. The man, in his 80s, relied on the corridor outside his unit for sleeping and basic necessities, highlighting severe poverty and social neglect. A volunteer group, Keeping Hope Alive, assisted in decluttering the flat and shared his story, revealing a man who hadn't showered, didn't own shoes, and lived in a space filled with pests, all while expressing a surprising level of contentment, making the volunteers reflect on the forgotten plight of the elderly.

For over a decade, an elderly resident of Chinatown lived in a one-room rental flat devoid of essential utilities like electricity, water, and gas. The man, reportedly in his 80s, faced a stark reality, spending his nights in the corridor outside his unit and existing in conditions that seemed frozen in time.

The nonprofit platform Keeping Hope Alive shared his story on December 23rd, detailing the circumstances the man endured, including living in a cluttered flat filled with bags of sundries piled high. A 2015 calendar hung on his wall highlighted the passage of time. The man, surnamed Wong, told volunteers he didn't shower and only washed his face at a public toilet, illustrating the lack of access to basic hygiene facilities. Furthermore, he possessed no shoes and couldn't remember the last time he had brushed his teeth. This situation, coupled with the fact that he has lived in the flat since 1979 paying a mere $35 a month in rent, paints a grim picture of extreme poverty and neglect. His resilience, however, was evident in his simple statement: 'I walk in the rain and dry in the sun' when asked about his clothing. The description of his living space highlighted a severe lack of essential items such as a bed, stove and kettle, turning his apartment into what was described as a breeding ground for pests such as cockroaches, lizards, centipedes, and silverfish
