Endorsement: Here's why voters should choose Marie Waldron over Randy Voepel in Assembly District 75 [Opinion]
The boundaries of state Assembly District 75 shifted after the 2020 census — forcing two Republican incumbents, 71st District Assemblymember Randy Voepel and business owner/75th District Assemblymember Marie Waldron — to compete for a seat in an unusually large district that stretches from the Riverside County border south through Fallbrook, Bonsall, Valley Center, Ramona, Poway, Lakeside, Santee and Jamul to the Mexico border and east to the Imperial County border.
Voepel, a Vietnam veteran known for his anti-tax, anti-regulation views, long seemed a good fit as an East County official, making his way from the Santee City Council to the Assembly after his 2016 election. In Sacramento, with the help of a clever staff, he established himself as aon social media. But any goodwill he might have had among constituents who didn’t share his deep conservatism disappeared after the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
