The prized instruments are among the 1,000-plus items included in Julien’s Auctions’ upcoming rock ‘n’ roll sale
A pair of historically significant guitars from Eric Clapton and Kurt Cobain are drawing headliner status at a Nashville auction next month.
“One of the most immediately recognisable, historically and musically important guitars of all time,” according to the auction notes, the Fool is billed as “perhaps the pre-eminent surviving symbol of the ‘Summer of Love’ and of psychedelia.” Clapton played the Fool on the majority of Cream’s recordings in the 1960s; when the band broke up, he gave it to George Harrison, who passed it to the English singer-songwriter Jackie Lomax. In the ’70s and ’80s it was owned and played by Todd Rundgren—who called it “Sunny” after Cream’s biggest hit, Sunshine of Your Love until he sold it at auction in 2000, after which it was exchanged through the private collectors’ circuit.
