“When we got back to London, there was a Chinese meal [with the Pythons], and John was particularly keen on exploring the subject of religion,” Idle said. “It was virgin territory, which is great for comedy.... We did about three or four weeks of research where we read the Dead Sea Scrolls and books about the Bible. We looked at the one with the very strange stories that had been cut out of the Bible [the Apocrypha], which is really wild....

Enter Brian , born the next stable over from Jesus. Over the course of the film, he becomes politicized against the Roman occupation and inadvertently picks up disciples, only to be arrested and sentenced to death by crucifixion.
