NHL: San Jose Sharks defenseman said Melnyk, who died Monday, was a passionate owner who deeply cared about the Ottawa Senators
SAN JOSE – Erik Karlsson hadn’t really spoken to Eugene Melnyk in several months before he was traded by the Ottawa Senators to the Sharks in Sept. 2018 – and there had not been much communication between the two in the ensuing three-and-a-half years.
“I didn’t agree with a lot of things, but I also didn’t know what exactly was going on on his end. At the end of the day, he did a tremendous job for the community for a very long time and he had a lot of success there. We have a lot to thank him for.”“It’s obviously very sad,” Karlsson said. “I didn’t really know what was going on there, so I had no idea. It’s very unfortunate.”
“He was tremendously proud, and I feel like he did everything that he could for a long period of time to try and win the Stanley Cup and give that organization the best possible chance to do so,” Karlsson said. “I think it was intentional, but you have to be able to prove it and from all the television angles that we saw, you can’t see it,” Melnyk said. “It was so fast.” Melnyk had a contract dispute with then-team captain Daniel Alfredsson in 2013, leading the forward to finish his NHL career with Detroit, playing the 2013-14 season with the Red Wings. Alfredsson came back to the Senators in 2015 in a front-office capacity and had his number retired in early 2016.
