Not even the Bombers know yet exactly what the “Essendon edge” will look like, but if their coach’s playing history is any indication their opponents can expect a rugged encounter should Brad Scott’s men deliver on their word.
Alastair Clarkson had the “anti-social” Hawks. Damien Hardwick enshrined the “Richmond game”. Now, Brad Scott is programming his men to play with an “Essendon edge”.
A no-nonsense defender, Scott’s uncompromising style made him a feared part of Brisbane’s mean back line during their premiership era at the start of the century.“I think all Essendon people and people who have followed our club for a long period of time know what an Essendon edge looks like, and we want that – but we want to be totally in control of what we’re doing,” Scott said.
Star defender Redman tipped over the edge against the Hawks, paying the price with a one-match suspension for his head-high strike on Jai Newcombe. The Dons, after receiving legal advice, opted against spending $10,000 on an “unwinnable appeal”. “Mason doesn’t need for me to tell him that he did the wrong thing. He knows that himself and he’s very disappointed first of all, giving the free kick away. The ramifications of the MRO obviously exacerbate that.
