The European Union agreed to extend the Brexit date until May 22, on the eve of EU Parliament elections, if Prime Minister Theresa May can persuade the British Parliament to endorse the withdrawal agreement. Britain had been expected to leave March 29.

European Council President Donald Tusk, left, and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker arrive to speak to the media at the conclusion of a two-day EU summit March 22 in Brussels.

May’s mantra since Britain’s EU membership referendum in 2016 has always been about “taking back control” of U.K. affairs from the EU. But the process has seen her lose control — of the British Parliament, which has twice rejected her Brexit deal, and now of Britain’s date of departure. Instead, the leaders agreed to extend the Brexit date until May 22, on the eve of EU Parliament elections, if she can persuade the British Parliament to endorse the Brexit withdrawal agreement.
