Texas education officials seized control of HISD on Wednesday. Here’s everything to...

Who is TEA head Mike Morath? Here's what we know about the man at the center of the HISD takeoverIn a meeting this afternoon, Governor Greg Abbott denied allegations that the takeover is connected to his recent legislative push to create more parental choice through a school voucher program.Instead, the takeover will make sure Houston schools will “no longer be failing their students,” the governor said.

Rep. Ron Reynolds, a Houston Democrat, argued that if the largest school district in the state, one of the largest in the country, can have its local control taken away, it can happen anywhere else. “This is a crime,” said Dixon, president of the NAACP Houston chapter. “It’s a crime against public education. It’s a crime against the Houston community.”

“We’re going to take every legal angle to block and to stop this action,” Dixon said. “We will not stand by and we will not go away without a fight.”The HISD state takeover leaves an uncertain future for the nine elected district trustees. A letter from the TEA said the agency will hire new trustees and a new superintendent, stripping oversight from the current board and top administrator.

Anderson outlined a list of top priorities for students, including wrap-around services for families like food pantries and health clinics, reduced class sizes, modern textbooks and an appropriate number of teachers and staff for schools. “Our responsibility remains unchanged — to serve the community in ways that improve educational and health outcomes for all children and families.”

Just like teachers and parents, Horn said kids will have questions about the takeover, too. It could cause some disruption in classrooms during an important period for student learning, she said. She thinks that state leaders should focus more on student well-being rather than the state’s best interests.

After years of demanding a state takeover of the Houston Independent School District, Gov. Greg Abbott is finally getting what he wants politically as heFor years, Abbott has called the HISD leadership a joke and a disaster. "Those who would strip us of our democratic voice and sell off our public schools to the highest bidder think they have won," HISD Trustee Elizabeth Santos wrote on Facebook."But they forgot that when they evict us from the halls of power, we go to the streets and fight even harder.
