President Donald Trump claimed the FBI and Justice Department would review Jussie Smollett’s case after charges against the actor were dropped by Chicago prosecutors on Tuesday.
In addition to the dropped charges, Smollett’s record was wiped clean of the incident and a judge sealed the case closed, sparking outrage from not only public observers but the Chicago Police Department. Although Chicago police did release some parts of the investigation, department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers were advised not to release any further information on Wednesday.
The Chicago Police Union requested a federal investigation of Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, who was initially involved in the prosecution of Smollett but recused herself weeks before the charges were dropped. Foxx removed herself from the investigation due to previous knowledge of a potential witness.
Smollett reported being attacked by two men to Chicago police on January 29. The department was initially investigating the assault as a possible hate crime after Smollett claimed the men yelled racial and homophobic slurs.
