Liliana Moreno, 36, was sentenced to three years probation for warning a suspected drug trafficker about a DEA wiretap she was supposed to be helping translate.
SAN JOSE — A Modesto woman who contracted for the Drug Enforcement Administration as a translator was sentenced to three years probation for warning the target of one wiretap investigation that federal authorities were onto him, court records show., 36, pleaded guilty this year to unlawful notice of electronic surveillance. She was formally sentenced to the probation term on Dec. 15. Both prosecutors and the defense agreed on the sentence, court records show.
Moreno knew a man who the DEA was investigating for allegedly being part of a methamphetamine trafficking ring that imported the drug from Mexico into California, according to prosecutors. She learned of the investigation when federal agents gave her wiretap transcripts to translate from Spanish to English. Prosecutors said Moreno met with her friend on March 17, 2018, who in turn warned the wiretap target.
In a sentencing memo, prosecutors wrote that Moreno’s crime was mitigated by the fact that she wasn’t bribed by the suspected drug trafficker, whom she knew through a friend who had dated the man.
