Jurors hearing testimony in the punishment phase of the trial of Jonathan Paul Jones, a former deputy U.S. marshal convicted of manslaughter in the wrong-way driving death of a UTSA graduate.
Jonathan Paul Jones, a former deputy U.S. marshal, was found guilty of manslaughter in the wrong-way driving death of Taylor Angelle McCowan, 23, on a Loop 1604 exit ramp in 2020.Shortly after jurors reached a not-guilty verdict on a former U.S. deputy marshal for intoxication manslaughter, instead convicting him of manslaughter for killing a young college graduate in a wrong-way driving crash, they learned he had an alcohol violation while free on bond and awaiting trial.
The University of Texas at San Antonio graduate was driving home late from a Bible study session. She died Feb. 15, 2020, two weeks after the crash. The alcohol violation came out at the start of the punishment phase of the trial, which continued Monday with testimony by Jones, who did not take the stand in the first phase of the trial.
Macias said a photograph taken by the device at 8:05 a.m. on Nov. 6, 2021 showed Jones breathing into it. It registered a blood alcohol measure of 0.036.
