The deputy chief of U.S. Cyber Command will retire next month, potentially leaving a critical vacancy at the Pentagon’s digital warfare unit at a time when the U.S. is becoming more aggressive against foreign hackers and election interference ahead of 2020.

Stewart served as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon’s spying arm, for almost three years before joining Cyber Command. Around 60-years-old, chances diminished for Stewart to take over Cyber Command after Nakasone last year reportedly recommended to Mattis that the Pentagon maintain the “dual-hat” leadership structure that governs it and NSA for at least two more years.By signing up you agree to receive email newsletters or alerts from POLITICO.

In November, Cyber Command, with intelligence from NSA, reportedly launched its first offensive operation, targeting Russia’s Internet Research Agency in order to prevent the infamous troll farm from meddling in last year's midterms.
