Bananas are a staple in many families' weekly shops. The healthy yellow fruit contains potassium, fibre and lots of important vitamins.
But have you ever felt like your bananas are going off a little too quickly? Becoming too brown and mushy for the kids to eat? Well, you may be storing your bananas wrong. This is because bananas and other fruits, such as apples, emit ethylene gas which make fruits around them to ripen quicker. Once your bananas are fully ripe, pop when in the fridge to stop them from overripening. The cooler temperature will stop them from producing so much ethylene gas, making them last an extra 14 days than if they were in the fruit bowl.Make sure you stick them in the fridge when they are yellow – if they are still a little green, they won't ripen further very easily.
