Pointing to Facebook’s “aggressive” actions in other countries, Clegg pointed to previous “exceptional measures” to restrict the circulation of content without offering exact details. During periods of unrest in Sri Lanka and Myanmar, Facebook reduced the reach of content shared by repeated rule-breakers, and limited the distribution of sensationalist content, although such measures have never been implemented in the United States.
Clegg said that all high-stakes decisions will be taken by a team of top executives including himself and COO Sheryl Sandberg — with CEO Mark Zuckerberg holding the right to overrule positions. Facebook’s proposed actions come as the social platform faces increasing pressure to lay out its plans for handling election-related misinformation, voter suppression and incitement of violence.
