A family's trip to Sentosa beach was disrupted when a member of the family encountered oil tar residue, leading to contamination and irritation. The incident highlights concerns over beach safety, with Sentosa Development Corporation reassuring the public about ongoing monitoring and response protocols.
On July 18 at around 5 pm, a family's beach outing at Sentosa took an unexpected turn when one of them, referred to as C, suddenly noticed a black, sticky substance coating a large part of the sole of her foot.
The situation quickly escalated when the substance was identified as oil tar by a beach lifeguard who assisted the family. C described the substance as difficult to remove, noting that it stained her shoes and later caused a small, dry, red, and irritated patch on her sole. The family had been eagerly anticipating their time at the beach, but the incident forced them to cut their activities short and spend time cleaning up the mess.
Despite the lifeguard's efforts, the stains remained visible, as seen in the single photo C managed to take. The incident was reportedly significant enough that C felt compelled to inform Sentosa about the issue, expressing concern that other visitors might experience the same problem. She has since shared her experience publicly, hoping to raise awareness so that other visitors, especially those with young children who might play barefoot, can exercise caution.
In response to inquiries about the incident, a Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) spokesperson confirmed on August 5 that the authority was aware of the feedback and reiterated its commitment to guest safety. The spokesperson emphasized that SDC collaborates closely with Singapore's maritime authorities and other national agencies to monitor and address any oil spillage incidents in the waters.
The SDC also assured the public that assistance is readily available, advising those who encounter possible tar residue to seek help from SDC's Beach Patrol Officers or to call the dedicated hotline, 1800-RANGERS, for immediate support
