The itinerant hawker used to run an air-con eatery in Chinatown before closing shop for almost two years. He now sells more affordable satay in a hawker centre.
is back in business, this time at a hawker centre in Toa Payoh. The lauded satay brand, which is famous among foodies, is co-owned by street hawker Ah Pui , 66, and his disciple, Ang Thiam Seng, 57. Previously located in Chinatown asAh Pui and Seng at their new hawker stall in Toa Payoh
Ah Pui’s larger-than-usual Hainanese-style charcoal-grilled satay boasts a good meat-to-fat ratio - apt for a stall named ‘Ah Pui Satay’. It’s also a cheeky nod to the hawker’s build. But compared to when we last saw him almost two years ago, we must say that Ah Pui looks a lot lessThe ex-street hawker started his career back in the ’80s, when he hawked from a wooden pushcart at Tiong Bahru.
Thanks to their lower rental fees, Ah Pui and Seng’s pork satay now cost $1 per stick versus $1.20 in the past, though their BBQ Prawns have remained at $2.50 per stick . Even then, he says “people still find it expensive, because now sell it at 80 cents or 90 cents per stick”. However, he adds that “Ah Pui’s satay size is almost double” that of other hawkers’.
Ah Pui Satay is at #01-13 Blk 75 Lor 5 Toa Payoh Food Centre, 75 Lor 5 Toa Payoh, S310075. Tel: 8393 1669.
