The Zhang Lab may have missed the Nobel Prize but it did not take its eyes off the larger prize - being able to edit genes in eukaryotes.
The research team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology involved in discovering and developing globally renowned molecular scissors called CRISPR has now found another tool that might even outperform their former work.
CRISPR has its origins in bacteria that are prokaryotes and lack nuclei. Scientists believe that working in more sophisticated organisms like eukaryotes, Fanzors might be more suited for use in other eukaryotic cells like humans. The search endeavor resulted in more than 3,600 Fanzor enzymes found in eukaryotes and viruses. The team then classified them into five different families, and comparisons between them led the researchers to evidence of a long evolutionary history.
