Astronomers hunting for the elusive Planet X have broken their own record for spotting the most distant object in the Solar System

BOILER-PIPE: Share to twitter Share to linkedin . Nothing is yet known about the faint object, other than that it is 140 times farther from the Sun than Earth and 3.5 times farther out than Pluto. In fact, its existence still has to be confirmed. In the meantime, the astronomers have nicknamed the object FarFarOut, following the confirmed sighting of an object 120 times farther out than Earth in December 2018, called Farout.

Sheppard, Chad Trujillo of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and Dave Tholen at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu have been surveying the far depths of our Solar System for nearly a decade. Their research has catalogued four-fifths of the known objects more than 9 kilometers from the Sun and discovered that these objects, which are beyond the influence of the Kuiper Belt and major planets, are grouped together strangely.
