Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb has resigned and plans to leave the agency in a month.
Gottlieb, 46, plans to leave the watchdog agency in a month, the Department of Health and Human Services said.
Health Secretary Alex Azar called Gottlieb"an exemplary public health leader, aggressive advocate for American patients, and passionate promoter of innovation." "Scott’s leadership inspired historic results from the FDA team, which delivered record approvals of both innovative treatments and affordable generic drugs, while advancing important policies to confront opioid addiction, tobacco and youth e-cigarette use, chronic disease, and more," Azar said in a statement."The public health of our country is better off for the work Scott and the entire FDA team have done over the last two years.
Gottlieb, a physician and venture capitalist, was sworn in as FDA commissioner in May 2017. He previously served as the agency's deputy commissioner for medical and scientific affairs. As commissioner, he worked to curb youth vaping, which he declared an"epidemic" last year, and opioid addiction.
