Courtney Dauwalter (courtdauwalter) continues to be one of the best over long, gnarly ultra-distance races.
Dauwalter said she did a lot of hill climbing on her bike until she was able to ramp up her run training in late July. She admitted easing into this weekend’s race with more conservative pacing than she might have when the race started on Friday night. Dauwalter was 12 minutes off the lead in the first 20 miles, but she continued to move up and was feeling good enough to take over as the women’s leader from China’snear mile 55.
Despite throwing up and feeling the effects of tired legs and a hot afternoon, she maintained her commanding lead. She slowed slightly as she struggled up the final climb to the LaFlarge ski area high above Chamonix, but by that point her lead was insurmountable. She descended the final seven miles back into the city amid a hero’s welcome, running the final six blocks amid a deafening roar from the estimated 10,000 spectators gathered.
“I love this distance,” she told the crowd immediately after finishing the race “You have to problem-solve and take each section as it comes, and that’s what I did out there.” Runner-up Kristin Berglund of Sweden finished an hour behind Dauwalter in 25:34:12, while Spain’s Maite Maiora Elizondo was third in 25:41:30
