MANILA - The Department of Education has slashed its proposed budget next year for subsidizing poor senior high school students in private schools.
In its proposed 2020 budget, the Deped asked for P21.18 billion to fund its voucher subsidy program, down from P32.12 billion this year.
GASTPE also subsidizes teachers in small private schools so that their salaries can match those of their counterparts in public schools. Education Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla said they may have a more accurate number of students now, compared to before. Education Secretary Leonor Briones said part of the reason for the fewer student beneficiaries is the migration of private school students to public schools.
