With their dejection, Roadrunners show how they’ve grown
UTSA Roadrunners running back Brenden Brady divers over for a touchdown in second quarter against Texas on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022 at Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium.AUSTIN — There was a time when Rashad Wisdom couldn’t have imagined disappointment like this. After all, you can’t be disappointed without expectations, and four years ago nobody expected much of anything from UTSA football.
UTSA might lack assets like tradition, and five-star recruits, and name, image and likeness money. But it no longer lacks belief, and that much was apparent for much of a 41-20 loss in which the Roadrunners spent three quarters scaring the living tarnation out of a crowd of 102,520. Even the coach who orchestrated all of this was excited, although he tried to remind himself not to be.That, of course, was the rub. The Roadrunners, after last season’s magical 11-0 start and ascension into the national Top 25, believed they were capable of winning Saturday, and they had good reason to think their chances were much better than most people thought.
With less than a minute left in the third quarter, UTSA took possession trailing 24-20. One more touchdown would have made things awfully interesting, considering that the Roadrunners had spent the past two seasons repeatedly winning close games in the clutch while the Longhorns repeatedly lost them. But Harris overshot a pass to Franklin, and Texas’ Jahdae Barron plucked it out of the air on his way to a 44-yard interception return for a touchdown that seemingly put the game out of reach.
