When Ayden Sheppard graduates, he will have played five sports at Grant. Eyeing college opportunities, he has doubled down on football.
Grant’s Ayden Sheppard kicks a field goal from teammate Rylan Art’s hold during a Northern Lake County Conference game against Round Lake in Fox Lake on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023.
But Sheppard made a difficult decision in the offseason, shortening his list of current sports. He gave up soccer to focus on football after doing both last year.“I had a little regret at the beginning,” he said about quitting soccer. “It’s all I really grew up playing, and I had a bunch of friends on the team.”
With his kicked-up workload, Sheppard has been able to make three of his four field-goal attempts, missing from 43 yards out, and connect on all 18 of his extra-point attempts for the Bulldogs , who have been competitive in the Northern Lake County Conference. “He wasn’t around us a whole lot last year, but this year, he wants to be involved,” Grant football coach Tim Norwood said. “He doesn’t want to be off on his own just doing his own thing. We’ll use him on the scout team at back or receiver. And kicking-wise, he’s a real weapon for us.”
