Former Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard has been released from prison after serving a 28-month sentence for violating ethics laws that he helped pass. More:

Hubbard’s conviction was a stunning downfall for a politician who led the Republican party’s takeover of the Alabama Legislature in 2010, ending more than a century of Democratic control. GOP candidates ran on a platform of ethics reforms and passed stronger ethics laws shortly after winning the majority during a special session in 2010.

Hubbard ran afoul of those laws he championed. Prosecutors said he used the position of speaker to steer consulting contracts to his business.
