David Fowler took the stand Monday to dispute another expert's medical testimony in the murder trial of Tyree Bowie in the death of Dante Mullinix.

Dr. David Fowler, an expert forensic pathologist, said the two-year-old boy’s injuries were more consistent with choking than strangulation, which aligns with Tyree Bowie’s insistence that Dante fell unconscious in the back seat of his car after choking on animal crackers., while watching the boy as a favor to his mother. Dante died at Hershey Medical Center nine days later. Prosecutors then charged Bowie with homicide.

Fowler ruled out strangulation as a cause of death noting that autopsy reports did not indicate hemorrhaging in the muscles in his neck. The force required for strangulation would have done more internal damage to the boy than was present, Fowler said. Earlier that night, Dante suffered bruises to his jaw which Fowler said could have been caused by falling out of Bowie’s car., which he dated as occurring around two weeks before the boy’s death.

Through questioning, prosecutor Tim Barker guided Fowler to tell the jury he had not concluded choking was the cause of death until Monday. Fowler said he read a transcript of Frasier’s testimony, which informed his review of the evidence between then and now. Barker also pressed Fowler on the bruises on Dante’s neck. According to Fowler, it would have been impossible for a grown man to hold a toddler up with one hand by the neck, because the child’s jaw would have lifted back and the child would have slipped out from their grasp. But he said it would be possible if the adult was holding the child against a wall.
