Keri Blakinger makes an appearance Tuesday at Brazos Bookstore.
“As a journalist, I’ve never done anything of this length with a narrative arc this long,” she says. “And for a time, I thought, ‘OK, it’s just like writing 30 Sunday stories that are 2,000, 3,000 words.’ But I realized that was not the case. You have to weave together this series of discrete stories to make it work.”
Having visited the rickety museum at Angola in Louisiana with its wall of makeshift weapons, I can testify human ingenuity can flourish during incarceration, with a matchbook turned into a sort of gun and Styrofoam heated into a shiv. Blakinger recalls a soccer ball “made of maxi-pads and dominoes.” She would mail her journals to people on the outside to keep them from confiscation and being destroyed.Blakinger in the book describes a “dark calculus” regarding our prison system, which leads many of those who find their way out of it to leave it in the past. “People want to walk away for understandable reasons,” she says.
Blakinger says her “body remembers what it feels like to do a triple Salchow. But I think it’d be deeply frustrating to get on the ice today and not be able to do that. So I prefer to remember how it felt when I was good.” “Since I saw him, he got trustee status, which gives him more freedom of movement,” she says. “I saw a guy standing there who looked like him. And he said, ‘Hey, don’t you recognize me?’ He’s working in the barber shop there. And he’s getting close to his first possibility for parole.”
