A veteran of health care management in San Diego County will head east to help El Centro Regional Medical Center find its way through trying financial times.
It is a situation that has affected Velez personally and professionally as his previous position was eliminated in a management consolidation effort at Sharp that was, at least in part, driven by the current financial conditions that even the largest, most well capitalized, health care systems face.“I was asked to stay in a different job capacity as a COO, chief operating officer, for three hospitals,” Velez said.
Given its proximity to the border, success in El Centro will be easiest for those who know how to reach and serve patients in Southern California and Baja California. While the same strategy might not work so well in El Centro, the executive said that he knows where to find the correct one.
