Singapore's former transport minister, Iswaran, has been sentenced to a year in jail for corruption charges. The court found him guilty of five counts, including obtaining gifts as a public servant and obstructing justice. We are closing our live coverage of Iswaran 's sentencing today.The trial was supposed to last weeks over several tranches, but after the prosecution amended two corruption charges last week, former transport minister Iswaran pleaded guilty to five charges.Of the five counts, four were for obtaining gifts as a public servant under Section 165, a rarely used provision in the Penal Code. One charge was for obstructing justice, the most serious of the five.
"I'm of the view it is appropriate to impose a sentence in excess of both parties' positions," he said, adding that taking the submission of either prosecution or defence would result in a "manifestly inadequate sentence".He went beyond what the prosecution had asked for, sentencing Iswaran to a year's jail.
