SAN JOSE – The former athletic trainer who was allowed to continue working at San Jose State University for more than a decade after female athletes first complained of sexual abuse was charged Thursday with federal civil rights violations for sexual misconduct.
Although nearly two dozen women came forward with similar complaints since 2009, Scott Shaw is being charged with four counts connected to allegations since 2017, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The statute of limitations on the earlier cases may have played a role in that decision. The scandal and the university’s handling of the case led to the resignations last year of SJSU President Mary Papazian and Athletic Director Marie Tuite.
Shaw, 54, who was also the director of sports medicine, faces a maximum of six years in prison if convicted of all counts. It wasn’t immediately clear why Shaw was charged with civil rights violations instead of sexual assault charges. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
