Former Seattle Sonics superstar Shawn Kemp was charged with assault in the first degree Friday after allegedly firing a handgun in a mall parking lot in March, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Kemp was arrested in March and investigated for a drive-by shooting. At the time, Kemp's lawyer, W. Scott Boatman, claimed Kemp tracked down individuals heand stole his property. An iPhone was among the items reportedly stolen, and Kemp was able to track down the device to a mall parking lot in Tacoma, Washington.
Upon arriving at the mall parking lot, Kemp claimed the individuals shot at him as he approached their car. Kemp said he fired his gun in self defense. After speaking with police following his arrest, Kemp was released without charges being filed.Boatman released a statement Friday maintaining Kemp acted in self defense and would plead not guilty to the charge.
