The suspect, a 65-year-old San Luis Obispo man, was paroled in 2018 for murdering a woman in 1986 under extremely similar circumstances.
OAKLAND — It took 46 years, a cold case investigator, and the examination of previously overlooked items containing DNA, but police say they’ve now solved the 1976 strangulation death of a man who was robbed and killed inside his apartment.
“I strangled and I killed her…without thinking nor understanding the outcome of it all,” Kilgore wrote in court papers. “I was under the influence of crack cocain and all that went through my mind was money. … I am truly responsible for her meaningless death. All because of my insecured, self-center selfishness.”
Police theorized Powers’ death was a robbery, possibly related to horse betting or marijuana sales, but the case went cold. Then, in 2021, it was picked up by Lorenzo Graham, a retired Alameda policeman who serves as a cold case homicide investigator. In his review of the evidence, he honed in on a picture of a cigarette butt that was left at the apartment, and later tracked it down in an evidence locker.
