A resident in Hougang, Singapore, locked himself inside his HDB unit, leading to a four-hour standoff with fully-armed police officers on December 23rd.
Fully-armed police officers were deployed to a Hougang housing block on Dec 23 after a resident reportedly locked himself inside his unit. The four-hour standoff began around 8pm at Block 701, Hougang Avenue 2. A housewife, surnamed Wong, witnessed several police cars and tactical vehicles arriving at the scene. About 10 police officers, some in riot gear, were seen at the void deck of the block.
According to residents, police were alerted after a middle-aged man barricaded himself inside his unit. After hours of negotiations, police confirmed the safety of residents and left the scene at around 11:50pm. A neighbour stated that the man, who lives with his elderly mother, frequently talks to himself, scolds neighbours, and uses a water gun to spray his surroundings, leading some residents to consider moving
