The Land Transport Authority (LTA) impounded four non-compliant active mobility devices (AMDs) after receiving a public tip-off about youths riding them illegally on roads in Punggol. The LTA stressed the importance of responsible PMD use and warned of potential penalties for violators.

Four non-compliant active mobility devices (AMDs) were impounded following a public tip-off on February 3rd. Enforcement officers apprehended a group of youths riding modified and non-compliant PMDs on roads in Punggol. The Land Transport Authority ( LTA ) announced the impoundment on their Facebook page on February 15th. In 2023, the LTA detected 132 cases of PMDs, including electric scooters and hoverboards, being illegally used on roads.

The authority warned that first-time offenders could face fines of up to $2,000, a jail term of up to three months, or both. Their non-compliant devices will be immediately impounded. 'LTA will continue to take firm action against errant AMD users who ride irresponsibly and endanger others,' the statement read. The number of active mobility offences has decreased since 2021. According to LTA data, there were 5,228 such offences recorded in 2023, a 35 percent drop from the 8,014 offences in 2021 and a 25 percent decline from the 6,996 offences in 2022. The top three offences were riding an electric bicycle or a motorised PMD on footpaths, using a non-compliant AMD on a public path, and riding an e-bike or e-scooter without a mandatory theory test certificate. The Active Mobility Act (AMA) prohibits the use of PMDs on footpaths, roads, and pedestrian-only paths. Motorised PMDs, such as hoverboards or electric scooters, can only be used on cycling paths
