The Cougars need one more win to reach bowl eligibility
After a 37-7 loss to West Virginia, BYU returns home to take on the Iowa State Cyclones. BYU is 5-4 and seeking its sixth win to reach bowl eligibility. The Cycles are also 5-4 and looking to reach bowl eligibility on Saturday. ESPN's predictive college football algorithm, the football power index, updated its prediction for BYU-Iowa State. FPI gives BYU a 38.0% chance to beat Iowa State at home.
Before the loss to West Virginia, FPI projected BYU to finish with a 6.0-6.0 record and gave BYU a 69.8% chance to finish with six or more wins. After the loss, FPI downgraded BYU's projected record to 5.6-6.4 and gives BYU a 52.2% chance to finish with six or more wins. BYU is on a mission for at least one more win to reach bowl eligibility in its first Big 12 season. FPI projects BYU to be the underdog in all three of its remaining games.BYU started the 2023 season ranked 60th in FPI.
Texas is the the highest-ranked Big 12 team in the FPI rankings - the Sooners rank eighth nationally after a win over Kansas State. Oklahoma is right behind Texas at no. 9. The Sooners travel to Provo to take on BYU in November.In the FPI model, Texas is given 57.1% chance to win the conference. Kansas State and Oklahoma each have a 14.3% chance to win the Big 12. Oklahoma State has a 12.6% chance to win the conference.
