Framber Valdez pitched well on opening day, but last year's Cy Young Award...
Houston Astros starting pitcher Framber Valdez pitches against the Chicago White Sox during the first inning of a Major League Baseball game on Thursday, March 30, 2023, in Houston. An opening day battle between two of the American League's best pitchers didn't go Framber Valdez's way, although it's tough to glean too much from an April start when neither guy was allowed to throw more than 86 pitches.
Valdez got good results, throwing five shutout innings and striking out four with no walks. He allowed six hits and faced situations with a runner in scoring position in three different frames, but he escaped each one. Things got the diciest when Valdez loaded the bases in the fifth, but he got Eloy Jimenez to ground out to end the threat.
After escaping the jam in the fifth, Valdez didn't return for the sixth. The Astros were satisfied with his 85-pitch performance in the first game of the regular season.
