France and Britain are proposing a one-month truce in Ukraine , encompassing the air, sea, and energy infrastructure, following crisis talks in London, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Sunday. In an interview with France 's Le Figaro newspaper, Macron stated that this initial truce would not include ground fighting. He explained that monitoring compliance would be challenging due to the vastness of the front line.
Macron further indicated that peacekeepers would be deployed at a later stage, emphasizing that there wouldn't be European troops on Ukrainian soil in the coming weeks. Macron also suggested that European nations should increase their defense spending to between 3.0 and 3.5 percent of GDP to address Washington's evolving priorities and Russia's militarization. He pointed out that Russia has allocated 10 percent of its GDP to defense for the past three years, highlighting the need for Europe to prepare for future challenges. In a separate interview with Milan's Il Foglio newspaper, Macron emphasized the need for a strong Italy to contribute to resolving the conflict in Ukraine.During Sunday's crisis talks, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni appeared to rule out Italy's participation in any peacekeeping force in Ukraine, stating that it was never on the agenda.
