France student protests are out of control, Paris police chief Patrice Faure warns, as 5,000 arrests and 600 injured officers are reported since Monday.

France student protests over classroom conditions and funding have spiraled out of control, Paris police chief Patrice Faure said on Saturday, October 3, as authorities reported around 5,000 arrests and more than 600 injured police officers since Monday. The unrest, concentrated in high schools across the country, has prompted riot police clashes and urgent calls for calm from officials in Paris and beyond.

Police Chief Warns Protests Out of Control

In an open letter published on X ahead of planned renewed protests from next Tuesday, Faure stated that those who had launched the movement no longer controlled it. He urged students to abandon school blockades and unrest in favour of peaceful forms of protest.

Faure wrote that it is time to return to peaceful forms of action, emphasizing that parents also had a responsibility to steer their children away from what he described as the influence of professional rioters and their supporters. The police chief warned that authorities would respond firmly to violence and vandalism.

Agathe Foucault, a spokesperson for the national police, told RTL radio on Saturday that more than 600 police officers had been injured since the protests began. Teachers and members of the public have also been attacked, while damage to property is estimated in the tens of millions of euros.

Arrests and Injuries Mount Nationwide

Since Monday, around 5,000 people, mostly teenagers, have been arrested nationwide, and dozens have been injured. Riot police clashed with high school students across France on Friday, and unions called for teachers to strike as President Emmanuel Macron's government battled to contain increasingly violent protests.

The protests have spread rapidly, with student unions now calling for a national day of demonstrations on Tuesday. Security officials fear that an organised protest in central Paris in particular could see further violence amid concerns that far-left anarchist groups could hijack the movement.

The students blockading high schools have voiced anger over overcrowding in classrooms, regular shortages of teachers and dilapidated buildings, blaming years of underinvestment. These grievances have fueled the movement, which began with local actions and has grown into a nationwide crisis.

Classroom Conditions Drive Student Anger

At the heart of the France student protests are long-standing complaints about the state of public education. Students say classrooms are overcrowded, teachers are frequently absent or unavailable, and school buildings are falling apart due to insufficient funding.

The government of President Emmanuel Macron has faced mounting pressure to address these issues, but the protests have intensified despite attempts to open dialogue. The involvement of what officials call professional rioters has complicated efforts to find a peaceful resolution.

Paris police chief Patrice Faure's warning underscores the challenges ahead as authorities prepare for further demonstrations next week. With injuries mounting and property damage soaring, the call for a return to peaceful action is urgent.

The situation remains tense, with student unions vowing to continue their national day of demonstrations on Tuesday. Security forces are on high alert, particularly in Paris, where the risk of violence is considered highest. The outcome of these protests will depend on whether dialogue can replace confrontation in the days to come.
